Shinto Essay Competition for 2008

We announce the new topics for the Shinto Essay Competition 2008 and entry regulations as follows. We hope that many entrants will join it.

1. What defines the thought and practice of “Yoshida Shinto” (Unique, peerless Shinto)?

2. Discuss the attitude towards Western thought and Western culture of any “kokugaku” (national learning) scholars of the late 18th or early 19th centuries.

3. The “shinbutsu bunri” (Separation of Kami and Buddhas) laws of 1868 transformed Japanese religious culture once and for all. Discuss.

Regulations:
The competition is open to all university-level students (undergraduate, graduate and researcher). Entrants should submit an 8 to10 page essay on any of the above subjects, including footnotes and bibliography.

Essay will be judged on their originality and comprehensive treatment of the subject.
Essays should be submitted by e-mail attachment file in “Word” format in 12-point type double-spaced on 8-1/2 x 11 (or A-4) paper size. Essays written in languages other than English are acceptable with English translation attached. Applicants are permitted to submit only one essay and must include short biography on a separate sheet.

<Remarks> Those who have already been awarded twice in the competition of previous years are not eligible any more.

The results of the judgment will be announced in the middle of October, 2008.
