Result of Shinto Essay Competition 2007
Sponsored by the International Shinto Foundation
(Announced on October 2007)

10 contributors (2 from India, 1 from Canada, 1 from Germany, 1 from U.K., 1 from Uruguay, and 4 from U.S.A.) participated in the Shinto Essay Competition 2007. The number of entrants increased this year, since the designated essay topics were interesting. Their essays were carefully read and evaluated by 8 jurors from Japan, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who are distinguished scholars in Japanese cultural studies. We are pleased to announce the result of their judgments as follows. In accordance with the judgment points we have decided to honor the excellent and good essays by one 1st prize, one 2nd prize, one 3rd prize, and two encouraging prizes for promising entrants. The prize winners will receive the bank check of the awarded amount in due time by post. All the contributors will receive four volumes of the collection of the awarded essays in the past. The contributed essays belong to and will be published by the International Shinto Foundation, Inc.

This year's subjects :

1. Comparing Shinto myths and other myths.
(We look forward to essays comparing Greek and other myths with those found in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki.)

2. Defining features of monotheism and polytheism.
(Students’ essays should seek to highlight what sets monotheistic creeds and their practices apart from polytheism.)

3. The spirit of Shinto and the martial arts.
(We invite critical reflections on places of Shinto, its symbols and practices in the field of martial arts.)
