A Shinto-style coming-of-age ceremony was held at the ISF (International Shinto Foundation) New York Center at 10 a.m. on January 14, 2006, with the former chief officer Rev. Mitsutaka Inui as the priest and the current new officer Rev. Suzue Nitobe as the assistant priest. Two people participated in this commemoration of passage into adulthood traditionally celebrated in Japan.
After the serene ceremony, everyone was given a glass filled with offered sacred Sake and toasted to the new stage in life of these young adults. The participants commented, “I am so glad to join this coming-of-age ceremony as I had never thought it would be possible in New York”; “I feel uplifted through this solemn ceremony at this significant time in my life.” Elegantly dressed, the two participants looked purified with brightness.
