On May 20, 1999, the Board
of Trustees of the International Shinto Foundation(ISF) selected
the National University of Oslo in Norway for the destination
of the fiscal 1999 donation of "Shinto Taikei" or
"collected Studies on Shinto", in 120 volumes, 11
supplements and a catalogue. The contribution
of the most authoritative materials of all Shinto literature
to overseas universities and research institutions has been
one of the biggest activities of the ISF. The selection of Oslo
University was largely because Mark Teeuwen, an Assistant Professor
of the University of Wales, who is also a trustee of the ISF,
moved to Oslo University. The National
University of Oslo with 35,000 students is the largest university
in the country of 4.4 million people. Japanese studies, which
belongs to the Human Cultural Department of 8,000 students,
has a 30 years history of classroom study and research. Although
the library of the university has approximately 50,000 books
and materials related to Japan and China, it doesn't have "Shinto
Taikei" despite the recognition that the materials are
indispensable for researchers and students of Shinto and Japanese
studies. The libraries of universities
and institutions in Norway have developed an advanced network
system for user. It is highly expected that "Shinto Taikei"
will contribute to a wide-range of research activities through
the network not only in Norway but other Scandinavian countries
as well. |
