“Spiritual and Practical Values of Martial Arts”
and
Chrysanthemum Day

September 9, 2005
ISF sponsored a “Spiritual and Practical Values of Martial Arts” event as part of NGO program in recognition of the 58th Annual DPI/NGO Conference held at the United Nations, September 7, 8, 9. Over 80 people attended the event on Friday evening, September 9th at the Japan Society’s Murase Room. The evening began with our guest of honor speaker, Mr. Djibril Diallo who is the Director of UN NY Office of Sport for Development and Peace, who spoke so eloquently about the importance of the UN’s role in encouraging the formation of groups throughout the world in sports activities. As Sports is a universal language, the UN organization's role is to introduce and educate the various nations such as Palestine, India and Pakistan, that they can learn team work and tolerance through sports. And, through a sport such as martial arts, they will experience the benefits greater health and welfare as well. Following the opening greeting and speech, a group of 10 students and their Master, Jeff Christian, from the Muzosa Bujinkan Dojo, provided a very unique demonstration of martial arts as a defense as well as an art. Jeff also spoke about the true meaning of the art and (Budo) teaching which is an unarmed manner of defense providing both a positive physical and mental exercise as a benefit.
The evening culminated in the celebration of Chrysanthemum Day, to include an Ancient Japanese ceremonial dance by Ms. Terumi Fukushima and Ms. Mayumi Kan followed by Koto string performance by Ms. Junko Inui. Guests were treated to a sake tasting, compliments of JIZAKE, Inc.
