From ancient times in Japan,
September 9th has been known for its "Chrysanthemum Day"
when the Japanese people enjoy the festivities of the season
celebrating the beauty of the chrysanthemum flower. Further,
since the number of Yang 9 overlaps, (9/9), it is called “Cyou-you
(double yang good-fortune celebrating day).”
As we continue to broaden our activities by introducing Japanese
culture in NY, ISF/NY organized the 2nd Annual Chrysanthemum
Day at the Interfaith Center of New York. Although most were
burden by stormy weather and delays in transportation, over
50 people attended our event. As September 8th in New York
coincides with September 9 in Japan, we introduced the custom
on September 8th making that the best day for these performances
in order to release any negative forces. The celebration also
included a offering tea ceremony by Ms. Tomoko Kamada, to
the Shinto altar and performances of ancient style Japanese
koto string music and dance “Wakayagi Style-Hourai” by Ms.
Ashley Hiroko Katayama, at the Interfaith Center of New York.
In addition, there was court music, Maiden (Miko) traditional
dance by Ms. Mayumi Kan and Ms. Terumi Fukushima. After the
ceremony Chrysanthemum (Japanese) Sake was offered to attendees.
To enhance the environment, a beautifully custom designed
chrysanthemum flower arrangement was provided by Ms. Mayuko
Fujita. Our special thanks to SAKE SERVICE INSTITUTE, INC.
for their complimentary offerings of “Kiku-Sake” (Chrysanthemum
Sake) for good fortune of Chrysanthemum Day. |
